Capturing Effort
Capturing Effort: The Story Behind Every Moment
When people think about sports photography, they often picture the winning goal, the first-place finish, or the triumphant celebration at the end of a race. These are powerful moments, no doubt—but they’re not the whole story.
My approach to photographing high school athletics and sailing regattas is built around a different philosophy: the most meaningful images are those that capture effort, not just results.
The Story Before the Outcome
Every finish line, every scoreboard, every trophy is simply the final punctuation of a much longer sentence. What fascinates me is everything that comes before it:
The player’s expression as they drive through defenders and make a pass to a teammate
The split-second decisions mid-game
The teamwork and communication that never make highlight reels
The determination visible even when no one is watching
These are the moments where character lives. They tell us how the outcome was earned.
The Work You Don’t See
What makes these moments even more meaningful is the reality that they represent hours—often years—of unseen effort.
Long before the whistle blows or the starting horn sounds, these athletes have put in the work:
Early morning practices before school
Late afternoons on fields, courts, or open water
Repetition of fundamentals until muscle memory takes over
Conditioning, preparation, and quiet mental discipline
None of this shows up on a scoreboard. But it’s all there, embedded in every frame—the posture of an athlete, the confidence in their movement, the resilience in their expression.
When I photograph a race or a game, I see more than just the moment in front of me. I see the accumulation of all that invisible effort leading up to it.
Why Effort Matters More Than Victory
Wins and losses are fleeting. Seasons end, records are broken, and standings change. Everyone’s season usually ends with a loss. But effort—that’s enduring. It defines the athlete far more than a single result ever could.
When I photograph a sailor hiking hard in the back of the fleet or a student-athlete digging deep late in a game with a lopsided score, I’m not just documenting performance. I’m capturing character, resilience, focus, and commitment—the qualities that shape who these young individuals are becoming.
Years from now, these athletes may not remember every score, but they will remember how it felt to push themselves, to persevere, and to be part of something bigger than themselves.
The Challenge (and Joy) of Seeing Effort
Capturing effort isn’t always obvious. It requires patience, anticipation, and attention to subtle details:
The intensity in a face trying to figure out the next wind shift
The posture that reveals fatigue—and determination
The fleeting expressions that appear between actions
These moments can’t be staged. They happen quickly, and they often say more than a celebration ever could.
A Different Kind of Highlight Reel
When you look through my photos, you will find much more than photos of the winning shot. Instead, you’ll see the journey—the grind, the preparation, the unseen hours, the teamwork, and the small victories within larger challenges.
This isn’t about ignoring results. It’s about honoring the process that leads to them.
Because in the end, effort is what connects us all—to sport, to growth, and to each other.
